Empower our youth to achieve their potential
Gregg, YMCA Youth Sports Volunteer
From T-ball to football, Gregg has been enriching kids’ lives for the past seven years as a volunteer coach at the YMCA. He quickly found himself eager for each game and practice as he was able to watch the kids on his team develop in sports while having a great time in the process. For Gregg, having the unique ability to be a positive factor in his team’s day is exciting. At the Y, we believe in nurturing the potential of every child, and volunteers like Gregg help make that possible.
Iris, Outside the Box Participant
Iris is just one of the many teens we interact with every day. Through the Outside the Box, we engage students making the transition into the 9th grade to give them the support and structure they need to have a successful high school career.
Trinity, YMCA Camp Reed Camper
In 2013, 352 children attended YMCA Camp Reed on a partial or full scholarship. Our camperships reach children from the statistically lowest income schools in our area. It is not uncommon to have children come to camp who have never hiked in the woods, swam in a lake, or learned how to build healthy relationships with peers and adults. In addition to fun, we seek to install real and lifelong values such as appreciation for the outdoors, friendship, and the confidence that comes from trying new activities or adventures. To hear them say, "This was the best week of my life" is beyond compare; it is our objective. Your contribution will give a deserving child the opportunity to experience the magic of Camp Reed.
Nurture the journey toward health and well-being
When cancer came into Bette’s life three years ago, she wasn’t very active. She read a lot, but was never a big exerciser. Then she got involved with LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA. She now works out 7 days a week and has gotten involved in fly fishing, rock climbing and many other things she never thought she would do. Bette says, “I used to live in fear and now my friends say I’m fearless because of my time at the YMCA.” For Bette, the Y was a life changing experience full of support, friends and new experiences.
Creating community to support our neighbors
High school can sometimes be a scary and challenging time for any teen. Outside the Box empowers students at North Central High School with the tools, guidance, and mentoring they need to graduate, achieve their goals, and dream big. Now a junior, Kennedy joined Outside the Box in the middle of her freshman year. For her, Outside the Box provides an opportunity to receive help with homework, meet great people, and go on fun, educational field trips. Today, Kennedy’s academic outlook has greatly improved. After high school, she plans to join the Army and hopes to become a nurse.
When Becki needed a safe, nurturing environment for her grandson Mark, she came to the YMCA Early Childcare Center where she found a caring, supportive team who helped both of them overcome challenges and begin to thrive. Mark now loves going to 'school' and Becki has the peace of mind knowing that with the YMCA, she can give him a better life.
