Testimonials from Camp Alumni Who Made a Donation

What is it you remember most about YMCA Camp Reed? Was it sharing during Sticks Ceremony around the camp fire at the end of the week, Chapel,  capture the flag, or fun with campers and staff? We know Camp Reed has touched many lives and it is a unique experience that has a lasting impact. Now you have the opportunity to pass on these positive encounters for many more in the years ahead.

"This is an opportunity for those of us who benefited so much from our time at Camp Reed to make sure the good times and positive experiences are available to kids for years to come."

Don "Dingy" Kardong | 1970 – 1973

"It is my privilege to give back to a place that gave me so much and continues to enrich others."
Steve "Sneaker" Smith | 1974 – 1975

"Camp Reed is a magical place. All of us who have experienced Camp in any way need to help ensure its lasting future."
Molly "TaMolly" Schemmel | 1976 – 1980

"We gave because we want all children to have the opportunity to be impacted by the positive mission of Camp Reed."
Joe "Quasi" Feryn | 1991 – 2001

"I gave because of the values and beliefs Camp Reed has instilled in me and the many opportunities Camp has given me to succeed."
Phil "Buster" Harrison III | 2007 – present

A Word from Tracy Walters

Dear Camp Reed Friends,

The intent of this letter is to let you know about the formation of the Camp Reed Endowment. This endowment will ensure that kids continue to experience the positive impact in their lives that Camp Reed has given thousands over the years past.

One of the highest honors of my life was the time I spent as a director at Camp Reed. When Leta and I accepted the task of operating/rebuilding Camp we had no idea that it would be the foundation for so many of the relationships with people we love and care about today, more than 40 years later.

Over the years and across the country you have come together many times, become leaders in the community, championed new causes, and supported important endeavors.

I am asking you to come together again, one more time. It is with great humility that I have accepted the role of Honorary Chairman of the Camp Reed Endowment. With your help, this endowment will have a lasting impact. Imagine with me, that 100 years from today, through your generosity and kindness, campers will still tell us that Camp was the greatest week of their lives.

Details are enclosed and can also be found at campreed.org. I remain,

Tracy Walters

"Deep Sea" Doug Safranek Prints

Limited edition reproductions of paintings by renowned artist, Spokane native and former Camp Reed counselor, Doug Safranek, have never been offered before. While Doug’s original work now sells for the high five and low six figures, four paintings owned by Steven, also once a Camp Reed counselor, and Julie Jones have been magically reproduced by modern technology to capture the amazingly intricate detail of Doug's work.

Only 25 prints of each painting, signed and numbered by Doug, are available for a one time donation ranging from $400 - $800. All proceeds from this endeavor benefit the Camp Reed Legacy Endowment. For more information or to purchase one of these prints please contact Steve Smith at campreed@ymcaspokane.org.

Doug Safranek Bio

Born in 1956, Doug is a proud graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and Boston College. Doug then attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he studied painting with Professors John Wilde and James Watrous and received a Masters of Fine Arts degree.

Rather than following the much easier path of oil painting, Doug has chosen to use the older and much more demanding medium of egg tempera (where egg yolks and dried pigment are mixed together to create the paint); a medium which requires an intense focus and uses thousands of very fine brush strokes to create images. Doug's intricately detailed paintings depict the diverse neighborhoods, inhabitants and cultures of New York City. They celebrate the immensity and variety of the urban landscape in a way which speaks to one's soul.

Doug's work can be found in many public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of the City of New York; the New York Historical Society; the Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock; the Frye Art Museum, Seattle; the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, Spokane; and the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach.

Doug is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards and honors for his work, including: Silver Medal, Painting Division, Greater Spokane Arts Festival, 1979; WARF Graduate Fellowship at University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1980-81; Marie Kohler Fellowship, University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1981-84; Elizabeth Greenshield's Grant, Montreal, 1986; University of Connecticut at Storrs, Visiting Artists Lecture, 1989; E.D. Foundation Award, New York, 1995; the Jack Richeson Award at the 2012 Salmagundi Club's international non-members show for a miniature painting; and the Gold Medal of Honor for painting at the 2012 Allied Artists of America show at the National Arts Club.

For more information or to purchase one of these prints please contact Steve Smith at campreed@ymcaspokane.org.
