My Y Story – Omid

My Y Story – Omid

A few years ago, Omid’s family fled Afghanistan and the Taliban. Initially, they escaped to Iran but were forced to flee again due to lack of work and school. They sought refuge in Turkey, but they were still not allowed the freedom to go to work or school. Eventually, the family was able to immigrate to the United States, settling in Spokane. With the help of the YMCA, Omid has been able to succeed in school while overcoming the hardships of being a refugee. Through a collaboration with World Relief, Camp Reed provided him with a full scholarship which allowed him to attend camp for a week of fun in the wilderness at Fan Lake. Omid wrote a letter about his Camp Reed experience.

“Last year I had the chance to attend YMCA Camp Reed. Camp was one of my best weeks ever. I had a lot of fun and made a lot of friends. I liked my counselor, Corduroy, and my Junior Counselor, Mac. It was their first year being counselors and they did a great job. I learned a lot there. I liked the sleepover, even though it was raining and we had to wake up at 5am and canoe back to camp. (It’s The Best!) I really appreciate this gift. It was such a good experience and I hope I can attend again. Thank You.
