My Y Story – Dawn Frey
Dawn and her husband always maintained a healthy lifestyle and enjoyed cycling and running together. Neither of them smoked. In 2014, Dawn was diagnosed with lung cancer and had to undergo months of chemot
herapy and radiation, and a surgery to remove a part of her lung and some lymph nodes. Once cancer-free and cleared for work, Dawn and her family wondered, “What do we do now?” Six weeks later, she was able to join a LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA class.
Class became more than a workout. It became a vehicle for bonding her with other survivors. Her family watched her reclaim her strength, physically and spiritually. She developed strong relationships with her classmates, many of whom continue to volunteer with her for the YMCA.
Today, Dawn is a certified Coach’s Assistant and Peer Mentor, serving other LIVESTRONG® cancer survivors. Dawn’s husband, David, feels a special, personal gratitude for the LIVESTRONG® program.
Knowing his wife had access to the support from her classmates who all endured the struggles of cancer recovery alongside her, empowered him to survive Dawn’s cancer, too. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA brought Dawn’s whole family back from cancer.
