My Y Story – Anita Coleman
At the Y, we strengthen community through healthy living because we believe that a community is stronger when people have opportunities to improve their health and well-being. Take, for example, the story of Anita Coleman. A loving mother of four and grandmother of eight, Anita has a passion for helping others. She has spent 13 years running her own massage business and often spends time with her children and grandchildren. However, Anita had some struggles with her own fitness, and spent many years overweight. At one point, she weighed 355 pounds and felt as though she couldn’t get up to enjoy her family or herself.
That began to change four years ago when Anita’s insurance switched. Her new doctor recommended water aerobics, and feeling as though it would be the best way to help herself and others, she decided to join the Y. She had been to other gyms throughout her life, but she always felt as though they were trying to sell her things. At the Y, she says she feels a much greater sense of community.
When she started coming to the Y, she needed a wheelchair to get around. Since then, over 4 years, she has lost 190 pounds and gave her chair away! She credits support from y staff as well as from her friend Jill, a fellow Y member. She now enjoys walking with her grandsons and playing Frisbee.
“When you are ready to lose weight,” Anita says, “it has to be a mindset, not just a diet. You don’t have to think about it anymore; that’s just how you feel – and I feel like a new person inside and out!”
Anita is just one of 3,500 members who are part of the aquatic program at the Valley Y. She joins a community of over 40,000 in the Spokane area who strive to improve their health and well-being through a nurturing, caring community.
