My Y Story – Omid

My Y Story – Omid

A few years ago, Omid’s family fled Afghanistan and the Taliban. Initially, they escaped to Iran but were forced to flee again due to lack of work and school. They sought refuge in Turkey, but they were still not allowed the freedom to go to work or school. Eventually, the family was able to immigrate to the United States, settling in Spokane. With the help of the YMCA, Omid has been able to succeed in school while overcoming the hardships of being a refugee. Through a collaboration with World Relief, Camp Reed provided him with a full scholarship which allowed him to attend camp for a week of fun in the wilderness at Fan Lake. A Small Art & Humanities Program Making a Huge Impact in the Lives of Teens On Friday, September 19th, teens from the Y Teen Friday Film Club and Y Summer Film Camps attended a night of short films and recognition of the work they did this past summer and school year. Participant Hunter Walker opened the evening with a welcoming speech, and then Max Delsid introduced the first film. A highlight of the evening was seeing Isaiah Wellington stand in front of an audience and introduce films while showing great leadership qualities.
