“The YMCA has always been an amazing place to work, but I never appreciated it more than when I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago. The friends I’ve made here have become more like family and their support & encouragement was priceless to me. After a few frank discussions with my class about my treatment and prognosis, we decided I should continue teaching as long as I felt able and they were getting the workouts they needed. That decision provided me with some much needed normalcy, and although there were many days I didn’t think I could possibly make it, I always felt better by the time I left the Y — lifted by the love and strength of those around me. Whether it was serendipitous or “cause and effect,” my bad days during treatment were always on the days I was not scheduled to teach. YMCA CELEBRATES LIVESTRONG DAY AT LOCAL Ys

Hosting Bone Marrow Drive to Honor and Celebrate LiveStrong Day [SPOKANE, MAY 15, 2013] – The YMCA of the Inland Northwest and LIVESTRONG at the YMCA are pleased to host a Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive in honor and celebration of LIVESTRONG Day, Friday, May 17th, 8am-8pm at all three YMCA locations. As committed partners in the effort to support survivors of cancer, it is important that we give members of the Spokane community an opportunity to take a meaningful action in the fight against cancer. Karen Atkinson, a program graduate had this to say, “When I completed my cancer treatment, I felt as though I was hanging on to a new life with an uncertain future. My support team of doctors was suddenly gone once I was no longer a patient. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA gave me a support group of other survivors with similar goals of getting stronger and healthier.
