My Y Story – Ashley Hughes

My Y Story – Ashley Hughes

Some Fights Shouldn’t Be Fought Alone There will always be points in our lives in which we find ourselves too weak to carry on and without the strength to reach our full potential. It is in these moments that we can rely on our community to give us the strength and support needed to make our dreams a reality. For Ashley Hughes, the source of her weakness was two years of intense cancer treatment, followed by nearly a decade of side affects, and eventually a shoulder replacement in 2012. The treatment that saved her life had also unfortunately deteriorated her joints. It was at this point that Ashley turned to the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program for the support she so desperately needed. Here, she got her ‘strong’ back. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a free rehabilitation program aimed at improving the quality of life for cancer survivors following the completion of their treatment. Through the work of certified instructors and trainers equipped with specialized training, participants are provided with customized...

My Y Story – Lauri Clark-Strait

My Y Story – Lauri Clark-Strait

I have been involved with the YMCA since 1983 as a volunteer, camp staffer, program director and as a member. The Y has been an important part of my life for years. But 10 years ago, I went through breast cancer, and the Y became my lifeline. The encouragement from the staff, the care of the members, and the welcoming atmosphere were essential to my recovery. During that time, my husband, a disabled veteran, completely lost his ability to work. We were struggling financially and were going to haven to give up our Y membership. Thankfully, we learned about the Y’s Membership For All program. We were set up with a payment that we could afford comfortably until we were back on our feet. We now give each year to the Annual Campaign so that others may have their lives changed by the Y just as we have. Lauri is the 2016 Valley Branch Annual Campaign Chair and she also participated in the Valley Y Pedal For A Purpose...

“I became a member of the YMCA in 2009. I was looking for a place where my kids were as welcomed as I was, and where I could work on my health goals. I found this and so much more! From the beginning, I felt part of a community at the Y. In 2010 I began teaching group exercise classes at the Central YMCA. I never could have imagined this path for myself but I’ve been inspired by all of the ways that the Y helps the community. I had no idea when I became a member, what an incredible service organization I’d become a part of. This is one of the things that make the Y such a great fit for me. I am a service oriented person. Coaching LIVESTRONG at the YMCA has really strengthened me as a trainer. But more than that, I have grown as a person. I have witnessed so much strength, community, encouragement, joy and perseverance through my experience coaching. Working with the...

“After moving to Spokane two years ago, I was invited to go to the Y with a friend. I felt instantly welcome and comfortable. I found the Y to be a safe environment to meet friends and stay healthy and fit. For me, the YMCA is my extended neighborhood where I find friendship and encouragement. It is a place where I can be challenged and continually gain new knowledge. I knew that I wanted to work here and it was just a matter of time before I found my niche in LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. Ever since my husband beat cancer 10 years ago, the LIVESTRONG organization has inspired me and given me the tools and drive to help other survivors. Helping cancer survivors will always be my lifelong passion! Serving as a coach in this program has been a real growth opportunity for me. Every day I am amazed and in awe at the strength and challenges that face survivors. Personally I have learned to really listen to...
