My Y Story – Dennis

My Y Story – Dennis

Fourteen months ago Dennis was in the third and final stages of an incurable cancer. He endured six months of radiation and chemotherapy to put his cancer briefly in remission. Then, Dennis fell. What would have been a minor spill resulted in an explosive burst fracture of his spine and an eight-hour surgery to repair his shattered body. Cancer had left him broken and alone. Dennis had no access to physical support or emotional support and no community where he could belong. Worst, he struggled to feel self-worth with no ability to contribute to society. During recovery, his physical therapist suggested he check out the YMCA for help. Dennis took a tour of the Y, and was told about LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA. “I found what was missing in my life thanks to LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA.” With access to excellent facilities and trainers, his balance and strength drastically increased. Dennis was no longer alone – he had a whole class of people who have been through the same...

My Y Story – Ashley Hughes

My Y Story – Ashley Hughes

Some Fights Shouldn’t Be Fought Alone There will always be points in our lives in which we find ourselves too weak to carry on and without the strength to reach our full potential. It is in these moments that we can rely on our community to give us the strength and support needed to make our dreams a reality. For Ashley Hughes, the source of her weakness was two years of intense cancer treatment, followed by nearly a decade of side affects, and eventually a shoulder replacement in 2012. The treatment that saved her life had also unfortunately deteriorated her joints. It was at this point that Ashley turned to the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program for the support she so desperately needed. Here, she got her ‘strong’ back. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a free rehabilitation program aimed at improving the quality of life for cancer survivors following the completion of their treatment. Through the work of certified instructors and trainers equipped with specialized training, participants are provided with customized...

My Y Story – Lauri Clark-Strait

My Y Story – Lauri Clark-Strait

I have been involved with the YMCA since 1983 as a volunteer, camp staffer, program director and as a member. The Y has been an important part of my life for years. But 10 years ago, I went through breast cancer, and the Y became my lifeline. The encouragement from the staff, the care of the members, and the welcoming atmosphere were essential to my recovery. During that time, my husband, a disabled veteran, completely lost his ability to work. We were struggling financially and were going to haven to give up our Y membership. Thankfully, we learned about the Y’s Membership For All program. We were set up with a payment that we could afford comfortably until we were back on our feet. We now give each year to the Annual Campaign so that others may have their lives changed by the Y just as we have. Lauri is the 2016 Valley Branch Annual Campaign Chair and she also participated in the Valley Y Pedal For A Purpose...

My Y Story – Phil Clapin

My Y Story – Phil Clapin

Every generation of my family has chosen to swear an oath to defend the country of their homeland. After hearing the heroic stories of my grandfather, a World War II Royal Air Force fighter pilot who was shot down over France only to triumphantly return months later to England to be knighted by the Queen of England herself, I knew I wanted to follow in the family’s footsteps. If there was ever a role model to follow, he was it. Shortly after receiving my degree at Eastern Washington University, I made the decision to join the Air Force as an Air National Guardsman. The subsequent year after this decision was perhaps the most challenging yet greatest in my life; helping shape who I am today. Finding strength, undiscovered motivation and a greater appreciation for life, the military also instilled into me a pride I had not known that only comes with serving my country and state. Because of this, a day does not pass where I would not drop...
