Impact In Action – Carole Taylor

Impact In Action – Carole Taylor

Carole Anne first heard about the YMCA through her physical therapist; they suggested she attend daily. After consulting with her family physician, she joined the Y through the National MS Society. She has enjoyed making friends and being out in the community. “There is always opportunity for laughter, and this membership has provided me with community involvement that is so important to my emotional well-being,” she says. She enjoys a number of our group exercise and aquatics classes and credits the YMCA’s staff with helping her every step of the way. With improved coordination and better balance she hasn’t had a “kissing concrete” moment in a long time. As a result of her Y activity, she has also been able to reduce some of the effects MS has had on her body. “To me, the Y has been a huge help with my self-esteem, and allows me to broaden my social circle. It has been a complete blessing in my...

Discover Discovery Camp

Discover Discovery Camp

Located at the Central Spokane YMCA, Discovery Camp is a day camp focused on the core principles of science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. Each week of camp is structured around a theme designed to educate, engage and expose children to new and creative aspects of learning about the world around them. With field trips to local cupcake shops, hospitals and the sewage treatment plant as well as meeting local FBI agents and video game creators, kids are sure to enjoy themselves.   This camp is designed with more of a classroom feel, but the kids will still get the traditional day camp experience of hiking around parks, trips to Splashdown, swimming and games.   Week 5 – July 16-20 – You Go Girl It’s cool to be you!  Spend time with friends building strong self esteem, learning about personal well being, discovering new skills, and enjoying stylish activities any girl will love!   Week 6 – July 23-27 – Build it Up For those who love to...

Volunteer Spotlight: Marcus Riccelli

Volunteer Spotlight: Marcus Riccelli

Tom Kang and Marcus Riccelli are volunteer advisors for the YMCA’s Youth Legislature Delegation program.  The program was established to allow interested high school students the opportunity to get involved in the democratic process of our government. Thanks to the YMCA staff and our community partners AVISTA Foundation, Smith-Barbieri Foundation, Progressive Fund, and Red Lion Hotels, Tom and Marcus were able to take 13 of our local high school students to Olympia to participate in a mock session of congress.  Marcus shares the experience:   As a volunteer it was invigorating to watch 13 of our local area students in the YMCA’s Youth Legislature program display their passion for government and the democratic process.  This was our first time and our team has set the tone and blazed a trail for future participation. Meeting twice a month to write their own bills, discuss the legislative process and study basic civics they performed admirably.   Their hard work was put to the test during the annual State Youth Legislature where...

Fun and Fit!

Fun and Fit!

A Collaboration with Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital   On June 8, the YMCA’s Fun and Fit program concluded its first 8 week program of 2012.  Fun and Fit began as an idea from a local pediatrician who was witnessing the harmful effects of youth obesity first hand in her practice.  With the pediatrician’s expertise, along with the help of a dietitian and child psychologist, they created a comprehensive 8 week program designed for 10-15 yr olds who are at, or above, 85% for BMI. In collaboration with the YMCA and our knowledgeable health and wellness staff, Fun and Fit was launched. The class began with 8 children, of which 6 finished the program completely.  The main purpose of the class is to help children see the value in making healthy food choices and to assist them with making physical activity part of their daily routine.  These two main factors (nutrition and activity) will help kids adopt a healthy lifestyle, thus helping them achieve a healthy weight.   Below is...
