Impact In Action Member Feature: Liz Best

After many years of poor lifestyle choices, Liz Best knew that it would take a giant effort to be the best. Liz had witnessed many within her Native American community suffer from the effects of diabetes, and she knew she needed to change. And, it was with her acceptance into PATHSTAR, the exclusive and intensive weeklong educational and experiential San Francisco-based Alcatraz Swim Program, that the woman looking back in the mirror was not the person she would continue to be. Shortly after her acceptance into PATHSTAR, a program committed to inspiring and revitalizing sustainable health and well-being practices within Native American communities, Liz knew that there was a vast ocean, literally and figuratively, to cross before she could successfully participate in the Alcatraz Swim Program. Years of neglect and unhealthy living made the idea of walking up to, let alone joining, a gym downright daunting. However, it was the YMCA, with its diverse and welcoming atmosphere and Wendy Jackson’s nurturing presence, which generated the perfect environment for...

When she joined the North Y over a year ago, it was intimating to walk up the stairs to the wellness floor. Out of breath and embarrassed by her lack of strength and weight gain, she tackled her fear and with courage said, “Something needs to change!” Kelli has conquered her fears and has visited the Y an average of 20 times a month over the last year. During that time she has mastered the stair climber, treadmill and bike. As a result she has lost 30lbs so far and is now ready to ‘step it up’ and...
