YMCA Receives STEM Grant
The YMCA of the Inland Northwest was awarded a $3,000 grant from School's Out Washington to implement a pilot program at two elementary schools (Evergreen in Mead and Trent in East Valley). The pilot program is a result of meetings with collaborative partners Mead School District, Mobius Kids Science Center, the Northeast Washington Education Service District 101, Eastern Washington University, and Tincan to improve student engagement with science, technology, engineering and math. Hands on activities will include engineering, designing and building bridges, towers and roller coasters. Students will learn the Engineering Design Process of ask, imagine, plan, create and improve. Once we successfully implement the program at these two sites, we will use it at all our other sites as well, exposing children to experiential applications.
New Program - Photography Classes
This 5 session class for the beginner to intermediate photographer will combine classroom instruction and practical applications to help you take the best photos possible. Classes run 1.5 hrs. Bring your digital SLR camera to learn about: Pre-shoot routines, and auto-focus, drive, meter, ISO, and white balance modes. Held at the North Y Tuesdays and Thursdays at either 10am or Noon beginning January 24, 2012. Program Member $90, Premier Member $45.
YMCA Leadership Change
The YMCA announces the departure of Rig Riggins, President and CEO, as of January 2, 2012. Rig will lead the Greater Pittsburgh YMCA in their expansion efforts. Alan Lesher, YMCA CFO, will provide leadership in the role of Interim CEO during the CEO search process which should be complete by spring 2012.
